Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
