Condemnation Surges as Former President Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Spurs Widespread Criticism
Individuals from both sides of the political spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the tragic deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Statement
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
“What a vile and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the remarks. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they opposed him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from His Own Political Ranks
A number of Republican lawmakers also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and mental health some families face.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly dared others in his party to justify the statements.
The Director's History and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "absolute horror" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
