Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their publication of a controversial video.
The Recording That Provoked the Dispute
The video footage, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic congress members who in the past acted in military or intelligence capacities.
"As we did, you all took an pledge to defend and support this constitution," the officials declared in the brief video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution aren't just from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Angry Reply
The video message appeared to trigger a furious reaction from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This is really serious, and Dangerous to our United States. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Leaders React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a joint statement condemning the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in America," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all worked our country with tremendous patriotism and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky death threats against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the security of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged digital publications and retract his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the announcement added.
Lawmakers' Strong Response
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We serve as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this country and swore an vow to safeguard and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "This commitment continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to restate the statutes," they added. "Our service members should know that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the constitution and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "The entire nation must unite and censure the ex-president's requests for our death and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
Additional Partisan Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the death of government members."
He added: "This is an outright THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should censure this immediately and without qualification."
The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This represents very harmful, you have important representatives of the government telling soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents without precedent in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly stated to the press that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."
Administration Statement
During a White House press conference on that day, when asked by a journalist, "Does the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the former president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who worked together to organize a video message to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the president's legal commands."
She added: "The purity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can cause chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically promoting."
