Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
