Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities shared surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
