Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with six months remaining on her contract, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Attack
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
