Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He contested justice and the law triumphed.

Two months following receiving a 27-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” the nation's democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now seems jail-bound.

Anticipated Incarceration

The found-guilty instigator – who has been living under house arrest in his residence while a series of legal procedures and petitions play out – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the near future, amid increasing rumors that he will be sent to a infamous top-security facility.

Historical Comments on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the conservative former soldier exhibited minimal compassion for Brazil’s inmates.

“For what reason must we offer those dirtbags a easy time?” he once mused. “They should just get fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “Unless you desire to end up in prison, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Jail Location Debate

But the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has shocked backers, a group of four this week inspected the complex in an apparent bid to prevent the supreme court from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, said he anticipated the 70-year-old leader to be jailed in the coming fortnight and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut problems – the consequence of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 political campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His condition is highly critical. He will not be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also worried about cramped cells and the standard of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells holding forty prisoners: “That is practically one meter squared per prisoner.

“We talked to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

Lucas is not the only voice speaking out before the ex-leader's expected imprisonment.

Authoring in a leading newspaper, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and alleged Brazil was about to see “the greatest wrong in its record”.

“This is an unfairness that eats away the hearts of countless Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.

Varied Popular Reaction

That may be accurate due to the substantial following Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. Yet his predicted imprisonment has also gladdened the feelings of millions other people who think he should be jailed for plotting to block the elected leader from assuming office – and even plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the incumbent administration's political party, stated: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to obtain respectful treatment – but proper handling in prison. He can’t carry on being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years praising the tough handling of convicts, had abruptly woken up to their entitlements. “Just now has the extreme right – which has repeatedly argued that human rights were not for lawbreakers – opted to tour a penitentiary to learn what conditions are really like,” he stated.

“He is a lawbreaker,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, degrading handling”.

Potential Incarceration Conditions

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now holds about fourteen thousand detainees, his more likely assigned facility seems to be a nearby jail for law enforcement and other “particular” inmates known as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

The accommodations are considerably more pleasant than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while occupying the impressive leader's home, about 12 miles away.

According to reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely reside in in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – about the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 sq metre bathroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a set and additionally a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his loved ones,” sources indicated.
