Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s selection suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man group, showing there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged several past matches.
During these matches, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the more likely decision.
Spin Options Considered
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some slow bowling while additionally bolstering the lower order.
However the coach has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “decent,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
