Throughout a large portion of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories built from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" has them experience a traumatic incident from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him for good.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a Henry as a boy find an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a defensive killing.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an altered blood type.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the tunnel was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the box could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a malevolent force, much like how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a showdown between the monster and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale that awaits.
