A comprehensive rescue and recovery operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of unlocated sailing vessels transporting aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Search Efforts Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval teams and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were carrying no fewer than nine sailors, as stated by a navy statement.

The vessels had been projected to make landfall in Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

Background of Aid to the Nation

Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country struggles through repeated national electricity failures.

"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are equipped with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," a representative for the convoy commented.

The nine individuals on board are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.

Earlier Humanitarian Mission

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the nation.

That vessel, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the vessel in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Wider International Climate

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, coinciding with the time a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Diplomatic measures have increased over the past months, with statements from various leaders highlighting the complicated state of bilateral relations.

In response to previous comments, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to discover the vessels and ensure the well-being of the people on board.

To date, there has been no official comment on the lost ships by the government in Havana.
